Hey, Northwood!  Because of our graduating seniors, the Science Olympiad team has seven available spots for next year!  If you are interested in any field of science, we will be having our tryout exams during October of the next school year.

Here's a little summary of what we do on the team.  About twice a month, we meet on Saturdays or Sundays for about 4-5 hours.  At the team meetings we usually collaborate with teammates, work on our events, study for the competition, and of course chow down on lots of food.  Some events require us to build or engineer different things such as model bridges made out of wood and test how structurally efficient they are.  In other events we work in labs and properly conduct experiments or create our own experiments ranging from physics to chemistry to environmental science.  If you're more of the bookworm type, there are also quite a few "study" events in which we prepare binders of information and study for exams in various subjects ranging from cell biology to fossils to astrophysics.

So, what's all this preparation for?  Each year, we gear ourselves up for the Science Olympiad tournament.  First comes the regional exams in which all the schools in Orange County compete in each event.  The top 5 or so teams move on to the State competition where we face some of the toughest competitors in the nation.  From there, only the top team gets to move on to the Nationals competition, which is where we hope to be one year from now.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, don't hesitate to try out in a couple months!  The specific subjects that will be covered on our entry tests includes a wide range of subjects.  You can find information about the entry test by going to the Science Olympiad's Blackboard page at NHS Blackboard – Club site – Science Olympiad, which will be up and running before summertime with all the info about the different events we will be testing in the entry exam.  One final note - we will only be taking on freshmen, sophomores, and juniors next year.
